Employees’ qualities that make your business stronger

In all spheres of activities, human resources are used: in agriculture, in industry, in the creation of information products, in the service sector, everywhere. The personal qualities of hired employees affect the quality of the work performed and the final business results. From a good tree – a healthy fruit, so says the wisdom.

The managers identify five key human qualities that they would like to see in their employees:

  • responsibility;
  • perseverance;
  • openness;
  • fairness;
  • benevolence.

Employees with these qualities are a prerequisite for a strong company, its stability and development. Let’s consider them in more detail and give them characteristics.

Responsibility

It shows as the fulfillment of the promisses: in time, of the required quality, in a specified amount. The relationship between the employer and the employee without this quality becomes meaningless. The employee is hired not just to do the work, but to do so, as the employer needs.

The head of the design department of the furniture factory never worried about the choice: all the designers were responsible people, and provided three options

The responsible employee understands that his work is a part of the work of the enterprise, the overall result depends on each component. He performs the work in a way that does not disrupt the sequence and timing of the company’s processes.

The HR department asked for a time sheets for the 5th day of the month. Then the accounting department can slowly calculate the salary, and do not stay too late.

Responsibility implies a willingness to share the result of the company’s performance. With a good result the employee is glad and suggests that his good work contributed to this. With a bad result – is annoyed and wondering if there were any shortcomings in his work that affected the overall work.

Perseverance

It is expressed in the performance of work, the achievement of planned results, in constancy and consistency.
Perseverance means to reach the goal, overcoming difficulties and unplanned obstacles.

A persevering employee tries to perform the task in other ways, if the previous one did not give a result, shows ingenuity. He is ready to work outside of normal working hours, at home, to consult, learn new, just to do the work. Achieving the goal gives a person a sense of value, because he can do it.

For a manager, a persevering employee is valuable because he can be relied on: he will do the work under any circumstances.

The head of the purchasing department thanked the staff for their hard work. The day before they were working until 22:00, and the analysis of the price proposals lay on his desk by the following working day.

The perseverance of HR staff was rewarded. For 4 months they introduced a program of work control – and now they knew exactly who performs poorly or skips work.

Openness

Openness is a consequence of the fairness and simplicity that is present in a person, it is connected with sociability. For a sociable employee it’s easy to call a client, to offer new products at ease, to find out in an informal conversation why there is no cooperation.

The success of the company depends on products and communications. A unique product may be unclaimed, because the employees don’t know how to sell it. Communications (connections, acquaintances, contacts) ensure the sale of products. A sociable person has many acquaintances, he easily establishes new contacts, communicates with people. Sociable employees often use their connections to solve work issues. Thus, the contacts of the firm are expanded thanks to sociable employees.

It shows as the willingness to share information and perceive it, in the accessibility and openness to the interlocutor.

The system administrator could not get to know from the bookkeeping what they are doing, that the program constantly freezes. A new sociable intern came, drank coffee with an tax accountant – and she told him this secret.

Sociability is the quality needed for sellers in the areas of services (restaurants, travel agencies, fitness centres). Talking with the buyer, the seller gives a sense of interest in the personality of the buyer, tastes and desires – wins buyer’s favor. The qualitative work of the employee with the customer facilitates the purchase.

The head of the sales department was right by hiring a former Amway distributor. She had a database of contacts for 1400 people, and for a month she signed 6 contracts. 

In addition to the customers, the sociability of the employees ensures the relations between colleagues, connection between management and subordinates, the distribution of new information.

Meetings at dinner in the kitchen brought the team together, even the most closed employees shared their lives. The personnel department was pleased.

Fairness

It appears in the delivery of reliable information, and in positive and negative aspects of the work of the staff. Fairness of the employee gives the manager the right picture of the current business processes in the company, allows to adjust them.

Fairness or truth is part of morality, on which society still stands. It is always valuable in a healthy society and company as part of this society.

If the goal of your company is long-term relationships with customers, then your work should be fair and open. Fair work provides a trusting relationship with customers and generates recognition in the market. It is built by the quality work of the staff.

If an employee in ordinary life says untruth, embellishes, conceals, then at work he will also distort information without thinking about the consequences.

Fairness of the employee in communicating with the manager is necessary for an adequate assessment of the work of the employee and the enterprise.

The manager asks questions to know what problems has the enterprise, why it happened so, and not otherwise, to have a complete picture, to know and understand the problems. Based on this information, he makes decisions. If the information received is unreliable, then the decisions will be inadequate – the firm will suffer.

The head of the call center saw that two employees work without rest, but they cannot cope with work. He began to compare the plan / fact and realized that the problem is in the overestimated planned indicators. He made a mistake, making a plan based on the answers of the departed operator – in fact how many times he caught him on a lie.

Fairness is important for the company in internal relations, and in dealing with customers. Reputation of the company creates customer feedback. If the company is caught in a lie – the reputation will suffer: the information about deception quickly spreads. Unfair work of employees with clients (untrue information) damages the reputation and profits of the firm.

The head of an insurance company was seriously thinking about the dismissal of the sales director. The mystery shopper showed how unfair the sales agents work. This could seriously damage the image of the company.

Fairness is important for employees who work with material values: accountants, jewelers, collectors. Attention should be paid to checking this quality when hiring for these positions.

Benevolence

Shows as a good attitude towards colleagues, partners, clients, everyone with whom this person contacts.

Benevolence in the work team provides a pleasant working environment, absence of conflicts. The best result is achieved by a company with a warm attitude of employees.

The success of companies working with clients directly depends on the benevolence of employees. Are the waiters unfriendly and evil – customers will remain unhappy. Are sellers unfriendly and sluggish – they will sell less.

Between 2014 and 2016, 27,000 Grand & Toy customers (a Canadian stationery seller) were interviewed and it was found out that the wish to recommend this company by 41% depended on the perception of the benevolence of its employees.

In July 2016, about 1,000 customers of Pink Jeep (jeep rental and excursion, USA) were interviewed and it was also found out that the willingness to advise this company on others was by 42% dependent on how warm the customers felt about them.

Benevolence of the interlocutor gives the feeling of experience, that he stands for us, on our side. A person is inclined to trust a benevolent person. He desposes to dialogue, to further action with him. The buyer who trusts the seller is inclined to buy from him.

Analyze employees for compliance with these qualities. You will learn what they bring to the company, strengthen it or weaken it, how important such employees are, in what direction should they be developed. Think about the reputation, does it meet your expectations.
